oh - and by the way - THANK YOU to all the people who tuned in for my radio interview yesterday. the cool thing is that tons of people tried to log on all at once to see the show. the not so cool thing is that all those people jammed the server and many of you weren't able to log on at all. so i'm sorry about that. next time we'll have to come up with some sort of staggered log on system...hmm...anyone wanna take it upon themselves to organize that one? ya, me neither.

what does it all mean?

so the other night i played in pomona, ca...perhaps best known for gang activity, but i have to say - it's a LOVELY town. the coolest arts district i've seen in a while...called the Pomona Art Colony...a section of the town full of galleries and music venues. really neat. and worth checking out. especially the second saturday of the month, which is when i played. it's an art walk - all the galleries stay open late and the streets are teeming with people...i'll be there next month, on october 9th, ouside sassafras organic, a cool store with natural homemade products and a gallery in the back room.

and now my odd story...

so i'm set up on the sidewalk with my keyboard and guitar, a mike and a small amp...playing songs...people are standing all around me on the sidewalk, some are sitting on benches...you get the picture...about 30 minutes into it (i played for three hours straight!) this older homeless guy comes over and sits RIGHT in front of me on the sidewalk. ear almost up against the amp. he seems very sweet and harmless so i smile and keep playing. he ends up sitting there for the remaining 2 1/2 hours...just listening.

but here's the interesting (and insanely bizarre) part: i decide to take a 10 minute break (ok, so it wasn't exactly 3 hours STRAIGHT) and i start talking to him. he asks where i'm from. i tell him upstate new york. now - keep in mind, we're in southern california, about as far from upstate new york as you can get...and he says "near albany?" and i say "ya" and then ask him where he's from.

ready?

turns out he's from schenectady. a little town in upstate new york near albany. a little town unknown to most people in NY, let alone california...which just happens to be MY hometown.

ya.

so i spend the next few minutes talking about the mohawk river, the rexford bridge, the hudson river...

he put it best when he said, "WHAT A TRIP!"

why diets suck

they turn semi-sane people like myself into foraging freaks who look through the cabinets for anything - ANYTHING - sweet, resulting in a midday snack of cherry jam. straight from the jar. yum. anyone got bread and peanut butter? wanna come over?

it's just not fair.

things that taste good and make life more bearable are things i cannot eat. things that taste so-so and are mostly used as a vehicle for other, more tasty things (eg. turkey and GRAVY) are the things i CAN eat...only without the yummy tasting thing that's supposed to go on top.

and why, you ask? well, after "the accident" i seem to have put on a few pounds...and being in the business i'm in, this is decidedly UNACCEPTABLE. the good news -- i can now sort of fit into my "fat jeans" from before. woohoo...the jeans i was going to throw out because they were soooooooo big (like size 28 or something) are now ALMOST about to zip. ya, it's a bummer. but when the media calls christina aguillera chunky, you gotta worry.

which brings me back to my first thought.

it's not fair.

i was at dinner last night with some friends. i had grilled chicken and steamed vegetabes, the other female at the table had a turkey burger, no bun and steamed vegetables, and the male at the table had french onion soup and rare roast beef with some potato side dish that definitely included cheese AND butter...and it's not just that men can eat more of what they want (because most of them can) but even the ones who CAN'T don't seem to care. they do it anyway.

so, as i greet the morning with egg whites and coffee (black) i say to you again:

it's not fair.
